The best online shopping experience
June 26th, 2009

Two weeks ago I tweeted about the most amazing online/offline experience I had ever had at sofa.com. I got a-lot of abuse in the office about being such a geek, so I thought I might elaborate about what made it so special.

Looking for a sofa is not normally a fun experience. For most Londoners you have a few choices:

  1. IKEA – they last for about 30 seconds before you assemble them only to find out that everyone and their little brother has the same one.
  2. DFS - enough said.
  3. Some over priced store like Harrods - I actually looked at a sofa that cost £11,000.
  4. Auction houses like Lots Road - inconsistent stock (obviously) but you can find some seriously cool sofas. However, with the auctioneer fees, transport and reupholstering, this can prove to be surprisingly expensive and time consuming.

And then there was sofa.com!

All great ideas are born from a session in the pub.

My last week or so has been spent getting excited about a networking event, I’m sorry but I never thought that would happen.

Working in New Business I have to endure a lot of soulless networking events and conferences, which isn’t to say that there aren’t any good ones, Likemind and Cwoffee are two great examples of how they can be done well.

A couple of weeks ago while in the pub with Tom, the brilliant Al, and more than a couple of Ales, chat turned to how we should make this a regular thing, taking the heartless networking event and inject some warm and fuzzy awesomeness into it over a couple of beers. I tweeted while in the pub to see how people would feel about a regular meetup and the response was so immediate that that was it.

Designers and Developers - it’s time to unite!
June 5th, 2009

The future of the web relies on developers and designers to really come together and to push new technologies to their limits in order to really utilise the potential of the Internet.

As an animator the web can sometimes seem like a frustrating place.  There are the familiar problems of compression, the limited options for user interaction and the stubbornness of HTML to finally step aside and let new languages offer far greater opportunity to the web.
